After a beautiful Memorial Day in Massachusetts, everyone was happy to see the sunny skies last for one more day for the 18th Annual NEPVA Golf Tournament on May 26, 2009. The NEPVA Golf Classic was again held at the Blue Hill Country Club in Canton, MA with approximately 104 golfers and ample volunteers in attendance. Tournament Director Frank Furber did another outstanding job of organizing the tournament and recruiting sponsors and players this year in an especially tough economy.

As in the past, golfers arrived for the 11:30 a.m. registration and received a complimentary jacket, T-shirt and hat. After finding out their starting hole assignments, golfers then proceeded to the luncheon buffet. After lunch, the tournament began with a shotgun start at 1:00 p.m. Out on the course, there were some special prize holes, as in the past. Several holes featured “Closest to the Pin” prizes. Other individual holes featured a “Betting Hole,” “Longest Drive Hole,” and two holes offered a chance to win $10,000 for a “Hole in One.” The “Volvo Hole in One” hole offered a two year lease on a 2009 Volvo. This prize was generously sponsored by Village Automotive Group. Unfortunately, once again this year, there were no lucky “hole in one” winners.

Out on the course, golfers were once again impressed by the Long Drive Demonstration given by Pinnacle Long Drive Team member Eric Lastowka. With a loud crack that made everyone around take notice, Eric hit a long drive for every foursome, showing them the skills of a real pro. Other special guests included NFL Super Bowl Champion Steve DeOssie of the Giants, and three time Super Bowl Champion with the New England Patriots Matt Chatham.

As tournament play ended, players returned to the clubhouse for cocktails and dinner. At the luncheon, and again at dinner time, NEPVA staff members were on hand selling raffle tickets for a prize raffle and a 50/50 raffle. Prizes this year included American Airlines tickets, gift certificates to Blue Hill Country Club and MapleGate Country Club, VIP Concert Tickets at Gillette Stadium, an autographed football, a Fall Weekend Cottage on Cape Cod, courtesy of NEPVA member Mike Savicki and his family, and other items. NEPVA is extremely grateful to the New England Patriots Organization, Dan Murphy and the Kraft Family for their donation of several event ticket packages (and the autographed football), which were used to raise additional funds. Our gratitude also extends to John Gibbs, the winner of the 50/50 raffle, who generously donated his cash winnings back to NEPVA.

As guests were seated for dinner, NEPVA President Craig Cascella welcomed everyone and expressed his gratitude to all of our tournament sponsors. These included: Corporate Sponsor Corning Cable Systems; Platinum Sponsors ADTRAN, Alcatel/Lucent, Danella, EDS Engineering and Data Solutions, Verizon New England; Gold Sponsor Telco Systems, A BATM Company; Silver Sponsors Byers Engineering, and Hitachi. Craig also expressed his appreciation to Tournament Director Frank Furber, his wife Mary, as well as all of the volunteers who made the tournament possible. Frank and Mary conducted the evening presentations of trophies and raffle drawings. Tournament First Place winners were the foursome of Fran Burke, Maurice Rondeau, Matt Chatham, and Steve DeOssie.

NEPVA wishes to thank all participants for their support this year and we hope everyone enjoyed their day. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year.
